Jena Six Week At Southern University

Next week will be "Jena Six Week" at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a series of events have been planned.

These events are presented by Southern University’s Pan Hellenic Council.

Jena Six Awareness Program: Jena Six: The Legal Lynching

When: Monday Sept. 10, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Stewart Hall Auditorium at Southern University

Purpose: To educate the student body about the plight of the Jena Six.

The program will be a PowerPoint presentation informing student of the situation, showing pictures of the individuals suffering the injustice, and playing a video clip made in their defense. Following the video a forum will ensue about the enduring existence of social injustice that young African Americans face.

Donations will be taken at the door for the Jena Six legal fund and students will be shown how to fill out the online petition to request the conviction sentences be commuted.


Jena Six Candle Light Vigil

When: Tuesday Sept. 11, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Smith Brown Student Union Patio by Lake Kernan at Southern University

Purpose: To inform students about a protest March to take place on Thursday Sept. 13, 2007. The Rally will include prayer, poetry, readings, and reflection.


Sparking a Difference March

When: Thursday Sept. 13, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: From the circle between the student dormitories in the back of campus to the student union at Southern University

Purpose: A protest march to raise visibility about this issue in the community.

The march would start in the circle by the student dormitories, cross the bridge, go past Hayden Hall to the other male dormitories and then back to the student Union. The March would include a performance by either the Band or a second line band. The march would be led by student organizations. The end of the march would be followed by the Collegiate 100 pageant in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Student Union.
